Benefits Of Gardening With Your Children

We have been under quarantine for almost 4 months now and if there’s anything most of us have commonly done aside from staying at home and social distancing, it is establishing our own backyard gardens. It’s a lot of work but it also provides a lot of lessons to learn aside from the benefit of being outdoors. This is why teaching our children to garden at an early age is highly recommended. Here are some of the things as to why it’s best to garden with your children:

Cultivates responsibility & patience. Growing and tending to plants require daily attention and care. Children will learn to reap what they sow and they will soon learn that if they don’t give it the love and care it needs then their plants will not flourish. However, this is no overnight process. They will have to be patient and remain engaged despite the uncertainties. Just make sure you are there to support them no matter the outcome.

Encourages healthy eating. All parents know it’s a challenge to get our children to eat anything healthy. However, when you let your children grow their own vegetables and fruits, they will develop a sense of curiosity aside from a sense of achievement and take pride in eating their own produce. This is also an opportunity for the kids to learn about the different kinds of vegetables and fruits and the process that goes from harvesting to cooking their own food.

Sensory Development. According to Early Learning Furniture UK, gardening engages our children’s sensory experience by “feeling the texture of the soil, seeds, flowers, and petals. They get to smell the amazing flower scents and see all the colorful petals.” Gardening also improves our children’s hand-eye coordination as well as building physical strength as gardening involves digging, watering, lifting and all sorts of manual labor. Just make sure your children are provided with their own set of tools that fit their size.

Nurturing plants at the same time nurturing your children is hitting two birds with one stone. There are loads of existing public groups out there that you may consult for Davao Gardening 101 or backyard gardening inputs you might need along the way. If it’s plants you’re looking for, Malagos Garden Resort have plants for sale in Davao including potted herbs you can order or purchase and have delivered to your doorstep through Malagos Homegrown Produce.
